The Baker

Meet Confectioner Claire Zegger

Hi! My name is Claire, and I am a college student who has a deep passion for baking. I have been baking for almost as long as I have been able to walk. When I was one, I was diagnosed with severe food allergies to eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts. Since most cakes contain eggs, and many bakeries use nuts in their kitchens, I had to rely on myself to make my own treats. With practice, I learned how to bake delicious baked goods that don't contain eggs or nuts. Knowing family and friends who also had allergies or intolerances inspired me to try baking gluten-free and vegan recipes as well.

In addition to baking, I am an active member of the food allergy community. I created a blog called The Allergy Advocat to share my food allergy story as well as the struggles I have and continue to overcome. Many people who try my creations are surprised to learn that they do not contain eggs. But do not be deterred! The goal of Claire's Confections is to prove that whether you have food allergies or not, you will find my goods delicious!

About Claire's Confections

The Story

Ever since I was little, it has been a dream of mine to have my own bakery. Because of my food allergies, I couldn't eat at many of the local bakeries, where eggs and nuts were common ingredients.

One day, I was walking through the farmers market in my neighborhood. As I admired the elegant pastries and muffins at the bakery booths, I was silently wishing that I could eat those delicious looking treats. Suddenly, I realized that this was the perfect opportunity to make my dream come true, that I could be the one to fill the gap of allergy friendly baked goods.

Starting spring of 2020, I began the process of obtaining my cottage food business license that would allow me to bake and sell home-made goods online and at local farmers markets. I applied to sell at FRESHFARM markets for the 2021 market season. 

 After polishing my recipes, I launched Claire's Confections, an allergy friendly bakery dedicated to incorporating local, farm sourced ingredients into delicious and beautiful treats that everyone can enjoy.

A portion of the proceeds from Claire’s Confections will be donated to food allergy research at Children’s National Hospital
